Frontier High School awards seniors at yearly banquet (2024)

NEW MATAMORAS – Frontier High School seniors received multiple awards during the annual Senior Awards Program May 19 and the 56th annual graduation ceremony May 24.

Those included the announcement of $1,061,550 in scholarships earned by 25 students; $43,151 in early placement wages earned by seven Career Center students; and recognition of three young men who enlisted in the military.

This total, and the information included below, counts only the scholarships provided to Frontier students by colleges where they deposited and intend to enroll this fall. Many students applied for scholarships that have not yet been announced, and many colleges provide grants in addition to academic awards, so this list may not be complete.

The senior awards slideshow will be posted on the district website and updated as additional information comes in throughout the summer.

To earn the status of salutatorian or valedictorian, students must obtain an honors diploma and receive the highest grade point averages in the class. Receiving top honors in the class were salutatorians Ella Mendenhall and Savannah Offenberger; and valedictorians Haylee Berentz and Albreah Triplett. All four were members of the National Honor Society as well as CCP Students. Each one was busy outside of the classroom while excelling within it, receiving multiple awards for their various accomplishments.

Ella Joan Mendenhall of Newport is the daughter of Bobbie and Jonathan Mendenhall. She received an academic scholarship to Ohio University along with outside scholarships. She has been Marietta Times Teen of the Week. She was a four-year member of softball and volleyball teams, Student Council, Student Section, and float committee; 3-year class officer; 2-year member of women’s basketball; and member of yearbook staff and Students Solving Problems (SSP).

Outside of school, she was active in her church youth group and is a past member of a travel sports team. She has completed multiple community service hours and holds a part-time job. She plans to study chemical engineering and hopes to get into OU’s 4+1 biomedical engineering program to pursue a career in prosthetics.

Savannah Nicole Offenberger of Newport is the daughter of Kelly and Daniel Hendrix. She received academic scholarships to Muskingum University along with outside scholarships. She was a four-year student athlete in volleyball and softball plus one year basketball; member of the float committee and student section; she also played on a travel volleyball team. She has completed multiple community service hours and holds a part-time job. This summer she is volunteering at the Wilds in bird research, doing research in her intended field of animal studies.

Haylee Madison Berentz, daughter of Heather and John Berentz, received scholarships to Marietta College and outside scholarships. She has been Marietta Times Teen of the Week. She is a four-year member of band (including Drum Major this year) as well as member of Educational Talent Search, float committee, FFA, cheerleading, class officer and student athlete (softball and cheer). She participates in her church group and completed community service hours. She plans to double major in elementary and special education and music, to become an elementary school or music teacher. She was also accepted into the McDonough Leadership Program.

Albreah Louise Pearl Triplett, daughter of Ashley and Jeffrey Triplett, received academic scholarships to Muskingum University. She completed two associate degrees during her junior year of high school. She was also a three-year-year member of the float committee and varsity cheer. She participates in her church group and completed community service hours. She will study animal studies at Muskingum with a goal of becoming a zookeeper.

Top recipients of scholarships from outside organizations (not including college awards) were Haylee Berentz and Ella Mendenhall, who combined for $78,650 in awards. They were among the 18 seniors who combined for a class total of $132,750 in scholarships from 26 different organizations, and 19 seniors who earned $911,800 in academic awards directly from nine different institutions.

Between the organizations and the colleges they chose to attend, eight students (those mentioned above as well as Brooklyn Dunn, Grace Knowlton, Ka’Laiya Martin, Savannah Offenberger, Ethan Snyder and Albreah Triplett) individually earned more than $70,000 in scholarships.

Twenty-eight seniors (61% of the class) completed at least one college credit prior to graduating high school, and four graduates obtained at least one degree from Washington State College of Ohio. Together, these students earned 1,080 college credit hours from Washington State; when multiplied by $170 (the current tuition rate at Washington State), the value is $183,600 in tuition costs.

Twenty-one seniors completed two-year technical programs at the Career Center, and 14 of those earned excellence awards. Seven participated in the Career Center’s early placement program in their chosen field.

Three seniors enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and will report to boot camp between June and August: Devin Carpenter, Tyler Humphrey and Drake McCutcheon.
