It’s a cow’s life in Redmond at Goloka Farm
The revered animals live out their days in peace and pampering at this bovine sanctuary.
REDMOND, Wash. — Some of Harry Terhanian’s best friends are cows. The entrepreneur and philanthropist is the founder of the Goloka Cow Shelter, in Redmond and Arlington.
“We always treat them with love and devotion,” Terhanian said.
The farms are supported by Northwest Share,a nonprofit that lives its message of peace and respect for all living things, rooted in the Vedic culture of South Asia.
“Care, kindness, gentle nature,” said Latha Sambamurti, Artistic, Outreach and Development Director of NorthWest Share.
Terhanian explained, “When you protect the cow it renders prosperity and peace.”
On this farm, the nearly 30 cows are relaxed and friendly.
“They’re very docile,” Terhanian said.
Sambamurti added, “They appreciate love and affection.”
Families are welcome tovisit by appointment.
“People can easily come, bring their kids, and associate with the cows,” Terhanain said.
Some of the residents are rescue animals.
“They also learn to trust humans.” Sambamurti said. “Even after they’ve been abused for a long time.”
None of these cows will ever be harmed.
“Cows symbolizes motherhood,” she said.
Their milk is considered a sacred gift.
“That’s a miracle,” Terhanian explained.
All of them have a safe and permanent place to call home.
“If you protect a cow it brings prosperity, happiness and peace in your life,” Terhanian said.

Many wonder why the Vedic and Vaishnava cultures especially stress protection of the cow. The philosophical reason is simple: The cow is considered one of our mothers, as she gives us her milk and thus nutures our health and well being. Just as no civilized person would injure or kill their mother, the Vedas teach that to take milk from the cow and then kill her is the same as killing one’s mother. Similarly, the bull is considered like the father because the bull traditionally helps in the tilling of the fields, and thus is to be respected.
In ISKCON farms no cow, bull or calf is slaughtered. We look at innovative ways to work with the bull and engage their God-given strength in the service of others, under humane and loving conditions. Regardless of milk production, cows and bulls also produce dung and urine which is valuable as fertilizer, compost, some medicines, cleaning products and biogas fuel. In the ISKCON farms they are sheltered in barns (goshala), wherein they are fed with healthy stapple and are taken care of.
We believe protecting cows is a most important component of protecting the earth. According to the ancient Vedic texts the cow is the representative of Mother Earth. And, when the cow and the bull are mistreated, Mother Earth withdraws her bounty.
Goloka Farm, Redmond, WA and Arlington, WA., provide alternatives to agricultural and dietary practices that support and depend upon the meat and dairy industries’ slaughter of innocent animals, specifically the cow.
We have 60 cows and calves, and growing. To meet the needs of growing herd we purchased an additional land in Arlington, Washington.
