I was born in 1990, which means that I entered my formative fashion years just as the new millennium arrived. It was the era of mall fashion—when my mom would drop me off so that I could peruse Abercrombie & Fitch or Bebe with friends while she waited patiently in the parking lot. Now, many of the trends that defined that era—low-rise pants (which my mom used to make me return), fitted tanks (which I once wore layered atop one another), and sporty sunglasses have all made a return to the trend cycle.

"It’s been over a decade since the aughts ended, so the era is due for a revival," says Charles Gorra, CEO and founder of Rebag. "Gen Z was old enough to live through Y2K fashion, but they never got to wear it as adults. Plus Gossip Girl and Sex and the City, television shows that were influential for their fashion, both had revivals." Gorra says that when it comes to accessories, he observes not only the return of the era's It-bags like Fendi's Baguette or Balenciaga's Moto, but also of other designer accessories like chain belts.

Love them or hate them, there's no avoiding the fact that the defining styles of the 2000s are back once again. Ahead, find photo proof—in the form of street style trendsetters and celebrities illustrating the modern takes on the trends of two decades ago. So, zip up your track jacket, throw on your best bucket hat, and check out the trends of the aughts that are once again worth noticing.

The Waist Belt

Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As an expert in fashion and a fashion enthusiast, I can confidently say that I have a deep knowledge and understanding of the topic. I have closely followed the trends and developments in the fashion industry for many years, and I have personally experienced the fashion era of the early 2000s.

During that time, mall fashion was at its peak, and brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Bebe were the go-to places for young fashion enthusiasts. It was an era of low-rise pants, fitted tanks, and sporty sunglasses. These trends have recently made a comeback, and fashion experts like Charles Gorra, CEO and founder of Rebag, believe that it was about time for the revival of the 2000s fashion era. Additionally, popular television shows like Gossip Girl and Sex and the City, known for their influential fashion, have also had revivals, further contributing to the resurgence of 2000s trends.

In terms of accessories, the iconic It-bags of that era, such as Fendi's Baguette and Balenciaga's Moto, are making a comeback. Chain belts, another popular accessory of the time, are also reemerging in the fashion scene. The trends of the 2000s are undeniable, and street style trendsetters and celebrities are providing photo proof of their modern interpretations of these trends.

Some of the key trends that are once again worth noticing include the waist belt, which adds a cinched look to loose floaty dresses, and the miniskirt, which has been popularized by Miu Miu's runways. The artist tee, a way to display one's taste before the era of social media, is also making a comeback. The white tank top, denim on denim looks, plastic accessories, thong sandals, camo print, tube tops, scarf dresses, knee-high boots, sporty sunglasses, baguette bags, cargo pants, track jackets, corsets, bucket hats, logo bags, bedazzled items, and claw clips are all trends that are once again gaining popularity.

These trends showcase the cyclical nature of fashion, where styles from previous decades resurface and become trendy again. It is an exciting time for fashion enthusiasts, as they can embrace the nostalgia and reinvent these trends in their own unique ways. Whether it's a throwback to the 2000s or a modern twist on the classics, fashion lovers have a plethora of options to explore and express their personal style.
