It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you the passing of our father, John J Zuvela, who left us to be with the Lord May 8th, 2024.Jay was born June 21th, 1964 in Monroe, Washington. He was the son of John & Betty Zuvela. He was the second youngest of five brothers.Jay graduated From Selah High School and from there on he continued doing what he loved, fixing things. If something wasn't working, he would find what was wrong. He retired from a long career of wildfire fighting. He loved true freedom, like a eagle soaring through the wind, that was him. If he wasn't home, he would be out in the wilderness of the mountains fishing and exploring his surroundings. He also loved showing and telling the Grandkids cool finds and things and sharing stories. (As he would always say "That's right! Haha") He was ALWAYS the first one to offer help if someone asked. Jay was a free spirited rubble with a kind heart. He is survived by his children Jarrod L. Zuvela of Ocean Shores WA, Betty Jean Zuvela (Marks) of Spokane WA, and John J. Zuvela of Selah WA.He was the grandpa of 13 grandchildren. The brother of Steve and Ron Beeler and Perry Zuvela.Jay Zuvela was preceded in death by his sweet mother Betty L. He attended the University of Washington with his high school friend, Ed Englund. It was Ed who encouraged him to pursue a career in teaching. In 1955, Dave married his high school sweetheart, Carol Heffernan. They were married for 62 years until Carol's passing in 2017. Throughout his life, he loved taking family and friends on Jeep rides in the hills above the Naches Valley. This area held a special place in Dave's heart, so much so that he and Carol purchased property on the Naches River along with high school friends, Ed Englund, Gary Jacobson, John Paris and Al Schulte. "The Lot" became Dave's second home and he spent as much time as possible in the cabin by the river. In 1966, the family returned to Federal Way, where Dave accepted a job teaching at Totem Junior High. The same year, he built a home next door to childhood friends, Ed and Myrna Englund. The two families remained neighbors for 54 years. Dave's precious great-granddaughter, Bowie Stanley, was born in 2017. Dave and Carol shared a passion for travel, taking many trips pulling their travel trailer across the U.S. and Canada. Many nights were spent in his basem*nt, listening to music from The Fiddler on the Roof or watching a Husky game. In 2016, Dave and Carol adopted their grandson's cat, Kitty. She visited Discovery Cove and swam with the dolphins, went to Busch Gardens and fed the giraffes, took several cruises, and traveled around the United States with her parents. She loved to bake, and especially loved making Christmas candies and gift baskets for family during the holidays. All looked forward to eating her candies. Eric was born on July 10, 1978 and died in his sleep in the early hours of April 8th, 2020. He had been in Harborview Burn Center as the result of an accident and after treatment came home to recover with us.Eric's happiest times were his early years on the Moxee ranch 4 wheeling in the orchard with his brother and sister or getting into mischief with all the same wonderful friends that had been by his side since their first acquaintance in kindergarten, Many, in fact, of whom he spoke just the day before he passed on. Eric very often reminisced about annual family trips to the beach with his grandparents, both of whom meant the world to him. He once told me "they were the best part of my life, Mom."Eric joined the Navy after high school, but after a few months of service on his ship he received a medical Honorable Discharge and returned home.He loved animals, and was a kind and generous person. Although he excelled at everything he tried, he enjoyed living a simple life with a few hobbies. He was content with lots of reading, gaming with friends, and visiting with family every few days. His biggest passion was writing, filling several notebooks a month.Wound care was especially painful for Eric but he was a trouper. He expressed how he loved being home with everyone and had his sister to spar with again and that was a good distraction.Eric is predeceased by his grandparents, Lester and Allie Zirkle, his aunt, Pat Zirkle and his uncle, John Roche.Survivors include mother, Gayle Zirkle, father, Chad Baker, sister Lesley Zirkle and niece Isabella, stepsister Karie Baker, stepbrother Chris Baker, his aunt Mary Roche and cousins Patrick, Michael, and Molly, his uncle Bill Zirkle and wife Linda and cousins Mark, Lester, and Amy.You were loved so much, Eric. You will be missed.

<![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (8)

Shaw & Sons Funeral DirectorsCarolyn "Carol" Zirkle, beloved mother of three and grandmother of five, passed away peacefully September 24, 2015 in the warm company of her family. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife to Rodney Zirkle for 36 years, who she is survived by; their devoted relationship has been, and always will be, an inspiration to our family. She was a marvelous mother to Jim, Mike and Kelly Gallagher and the wonderful grandmother of Erin, Cailin, Conner, Joe and Ashley Gallagher. She was preceded in death by a son, Kelly B. Gallagher; daughter-in-law Billie Zirkle; parents Albert G. & Irene C. Edwards. She should be remembered as a woman who dreamed and cared for the world and was able to see so much of it. Growing up in a Navy family she traveled and lived all over the United States. From Philadelphia—where she was born—to Seattle. She worked at a West Seattle grocer where she met the father of her three adored boys. He was a meat cutter, she was a meat wrapper. They both accepted positions in Yakima 53 years ago. Carol has been a dedicated part of the community ever since. Her current husband of 36 years, Rodney Zirkle, entered her life when she needed a partner and Carol and her family got so much more. He purchased her an idyllic ranch on Pleasant Hills Dr. and ensured her happiness and stability as they embarked on their life together. Sharing a love for cruises they saw much of the world together—from Europe to the Caribbean—their travels always returned them to Yakima, their home. Among all her hobbies she enjoyed bowling immensely; for over a decade she participated in a local women's bowling league. Carol retired from Sears, where she worked in women's fashion, after 30 dedicated years, and devoted her time to her family and opened her heart to the world. Carol was an avid supporter of an unimaginable variety of causes. As a cancer survivor and animal lover supporting the American Cancer Society and Humane Society are only part of her huge heart. Veterans of Foreign Wars, Union Gospel Mission, World Wildlife Fund, Boys Town, Shriners and St. Jude's are examples of how many people were helped by Carol's generosity. Her heart, character and love of family are her lasting legacies as she peers down on her loved ones from atop the world she cared for. She will forever be in our hearts.Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, Yakima.Memories may be shared at www.shawandsons.com.

Prosser Funeral Home & CrematoryMary Ellen Zimmermann, the daughter of the late Maranda Wehde and Cyril Krueger went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2017. She was born in Mayville, Wisconsin on April 18, 1936 and married Charles Edward Zimmermann on June 23, 1956. Mary Ellen resided in Prosser, Washington for 40 years where she was an active member of the community. She supported various youth and scholarship programs as well as volunteering her time. Mary Ellen worked for many years at Prosser Memorial Hospital and the Prosser Medical Clinic where she was admired for her tireless work ethic and well-known resourcefulness. She had connections that were always a wonder, even to her children. If you needed something done, just ask Mary Ellen! Everyone knew Mary Ellen would give you the shirt off her back, but not before it was bleached clean! Even when Mary Ellen moved to the Tri-Cities, her love of Prosser was apparent, always seeing it as her home.Mary Ellen was the "Pickle Queen" of 3rd floor Rogers Hall at Washington State University, as David always took pickles from home back to the dorm during his visits to Prosser. She was famous for her homemade pies, one-of-a-kind applesauce, and growing a variety of flowers. She took great joy in sharing her talents and brightening the days of others with large bouquets of her gladiolas. As many of you well know, Mary Ellen was a meticulous cleaner. She could spot a piece of lint from 50 yards away. Doing laundry was a stress reliever for her, she even enjoyed doing all the washing for the Prosser Medical clinic and her family. You could often hear her washing machine going into the wee hours of the night much to the dismay of our dad! Her love for the outdoors was evident just by looking at her beautiful flower arrangements and gorgeous year-round tan. Her warm and giving nature will be remembered by all and her generous spirit will be greatly missed.Mary Ellen is survived by her sister Doris Magyar of Two Rivers, WI and her brother David Krueger of Richfield, WI; her children, David Zimmermann (Sarah) of Kalamazoo, MI, Diane Lewinski of Kennewick, WA; Karen Gifford (Mark) of Kirkland WA; and Karol Hockaday (John) of Pasco, WA; her seven grandchildren, Derek, Hunter, Addison, Alex, Emma, Jacob, and Joseph, including one great-grandson, Brian. <![CDATA[Yakima Herald: All Categories]]> (29)

On Sept 13, 2023, we lost a kind and generous soul. Dale Alan Zeutenhorst, age 66, was born and graduated high school in Yakima, WA. He and his family were living in Vancouver, WA, when he passed away due to an unexpected cardiac event. He is survived by his wife, Leith Zeutenhorst, and son, Sixten Zeis, as well as Jim Zeutenhorst (brother), Pam Zeutenhorst (sister), Angeline Zeutenhorst (aunt), and many cousins, nephews, & nieces. At 6'4", many of us knew Dale as the ultimate "gentle giant." From a young age, he showed compassion for both people and animals. He was a dog- and cat-whisperer who would carefully trap mice and set them free in the wild. He looked out for anyone who needed protection. As a kid, after helping his younger sister move some panes of glass to rescue a trapped kitten, he didn't bat an eye when glass shattered over his knee—he kept calm just to avoid upsetting her. This calm became one of Dale's calling cards. He was often seen as a rock—the eye of the storm. Even when chaos was swirling around him, he took a thoughtful, measured approach. Dale's dad used to say that if Dale and Pam ever came across a ladder, Pam would immediately climb to the top, while Dale would be checking it out to make sure it was safe.To be fair, Dale wasn't a big fan of heights. But there was nothing he wouldn't do to make sure his loved ones had a secure base to explore, create, and thrive.Dale's devotion to his family was evident in everything he did. In the hospital recently, when staff asked about him and Leith, he announced proudly, "We're newlyweds—it's only been 48 years!" As a friend put it, Dale and Leith were "married forever and so in love."Among the many ways they complemented each other, Leith had a gift for helping Dale let loose and play. Whether he was rocking out as the bearded lady at a friend's haunted house, or wearing a tutu and boots to fill in for a missing clown, Leith often got Dale out of his shell—and Dale was willing to join in.Although Dale was known for his steady demeanor, he was ready to take risks when the situation called for it, especially where his family was concerned. Early in his career, he made a decision to strike out on his own in order to have more flexible hours to spend with Sixten and Leith. It wasn't easy, but he made it work. That flexibility made it possible to do cool things together, from building a popsicle suspension bridge in Cub Scouts that not only held all the available weights, but also the biggest Cub Scout they could find, to creating a series of captivating art cars. The first time Dale and Leith attended an art car event was on their anniversary—and that kicked off 25 years of being active in the art car community. A friend (and fellow cartist) called them a "fixture" at the Seattle Art Car Blowout, "between being the first to offer to help set up in the mornings, to pitching in on cooking for our masses, and just being the most positive, helpful, fun, and friendly members of our art car family."Spending time and having adventures together gave Dale opportunities to model what it means to be a good man. He worked hard for what he believed was right. He treated everyone with respect, and only raised his voice if there was actual danger involved. He gave encouragement and radiated a sense of "you've got this" when helping others learn new things. And he took ownership: if something was his mistake, he would fix it or pay for it—but if it wasn't, he calmly stood his ground.Dale brought this blend of perseverance and integrity to his work in the often-stressful world of IT. With both colleagues and customers, he was consistently patient. He was always ready to give people the benefit of doubt, find a helpful way to explain things, and focus on what needed to be done (even at odd hours).Dale took satisfaction in—and brought joy to—his work. He met some of his most treasured friends on the job. He loved people, and people were happy to see him. In some customers' server rooms, there's a designated hook for him to literally hang his (western style) hat.Dale's sense of humor was often a bit of a "sneak attack." He had a habit of looking like he was barely listening to something, then as a friend put it, "Here comes the Zeutenhorst wink" ...and bam! He would nail the perfect wry quip. On the flip side, when something really struck him as funny, his face would break into a huge grin, and he would slap his knee in delight. His greatest source of joy was giving to others. To know Dale was to experience his generosity. He was gracious with his time, knowledge, and gifts. He especially loved to connect about his passions—from computers to food-based hobbies, to Leith's art, to his electric car. If you were lucky (as many people were), you may have gotten to taste some of the fruits of his labors. Smoked cheese, coffee, waffle mix...Dale liked to fine-tune his understanding of how things worked, and the results were delicious and widely shared. He was also generous with funds when he could be—and often a bit beyond that. When he was heading out from seeing friends or family who might have been struggling, he would ask, with kind sincerity, "Is there anything we can do for you?"Leith's dad had a saying Dale liked and co-opted: "Let a man stretch his soul." When someone would protest that Dale was offering too much, he'd reassure them, saying, "Ah, let me stretch my soul..."Dale, you did so much for us, your soul stretched all the way to another dimension. And in this one you've got a beautiful legacy. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of the organizations that Dale supported: Multiple Sclerosis Society of Portland (www.msoregon.org), Free Geeks www.freegeeks.org, Seatle Art Cars www.seattleartcars.org; Transport Evolved (Dale was a patron) www.transportevolved.com.A celebration of life for Dale is being planned around his birthday in October. Please check Dale's Facebook page for more information.

Brookside Funeral Home & CrematoryCharlotte Gayle Zerr (Collier) of Yakima, passed away March 2, 2017 at Cottage in the Meadow. She was 75. Charlotte was born on June 5, 1941 in Astoria, OR. She moved to Yakima in 1948 graduating from Naches High School in 1959. She attended Washington State University and graduated from Yakima Business College. She met Ron shortly thereafter and they were married on January 20, 1962. She worked as an office manager for C & H Hardware for many years, retiring in 2001.Our grandma was the kind of person that had a spirit that could light up a room and she always made you feel good about yourself. Whether you had met her for the first time, where she probably called you sugar bear, or you had spent countless holidays or afternoons on the couch in her home, you felt grandma's love, always. Sometimes it came in the form of random text messages saying "hey kid just thinkin bout cha, LU" or you felt it when she was in the crowd at every single school play or game or performance you ever had. Sometimes you felt it while she was washing your face with a cool washcloth while saying, "washy washy washy!" Or it sounded like her calling on your birthday only to belt the birthday song solo for every kid, grandkid and friend she knew. The kind heart and beauty of our grandma extends well beyond her home, but to everyone through her endless patience, her perpetual smile, and her hidden wit and sass—and of course her love of the Pillsbury Doughboy. Losing grandma wasn't just a loss for her family but a loss for everyone who knew her, because if you knew her, you loved her, and she loved you.Charlotte is survived by her husband, Ronald Dean Zerr Sr., three daughters, Kimberly Zerr (Sidney) Ottem, Candace Zerr, Tami Zerr-Rich, and one son, Ronald Zerr, Jr. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Trevor Heilman, Cheyenne Ottem, McKenzi Rich, Ronald Zerr, III, Tanner Rich, Lauren Ottem, Payton Stark and Brody Zerr, her beloved sister Chris Reade and countless friends and family. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, William and Hazel (Olsen) Collier, brother, Michael Collier, and sister, Judy Collier Shideler. The Memorial Service will be Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Brookside Funeral Home (500 W. Prospect, Moxee, WA), followed by a reception at the family home. Brookside Funeral Home is caring for the family. Online condolences and memories may be left for the family at www.brooksidefhc.com.

The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteousness Judge, will award to me on that day.2 Timothy 4:6-8GERALD (Jerry) Jerome Zerr, 82, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 9, 2022. Jerry was born September 8, 1940, in Yakima, WA to Casper and Irene (Kahl).Jerry graduated from AC Davis High School in Yakima, WA and worked as a manager at Snyder Bakery until his retirement. He then managed M & E Memorial Markers in Wenatchee, WA until his second retirement.Jerry met and married Judy Nadeau from Michigan and moved her to the Pacific Northwest to enjoy his retirement years with her. Upon his second retirement, Jerry and Judy moved to Lake Chelan where he enjoyed family and friends. They were considered snowbirds when they wintered in Michigan!Jerry led an adventurous life and lived to tell a plethora of stories and jokes - everything from catching skunks to falling into Lake Chelan from the pump house roof. His sense of humor and quick wit will be long remembered. The true loves of his life, whom he adored, with exception to Judy and his beloved Pilar, were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.He was an active member of Eastmont Kiwanis for over 30 years where he enjoyed activities benefiting the children of the community. He enjoyed working the grill at their food related events, playing Santa, baking dozens of cookies to hand-out at Nason Creek, and selling tickets at the North Central Washington Fair in Waterville. For many years he enjoyed fishing in Alaska, especially when the grandkids could join him. As the years took their toll, he always missed hunting and fishing, but loved to recapture those great times with his stories."No Regrets," he would say as he watched his grandchildren grow into responsible adults.
